Probably one of the more intimidating lead guitarist/lead singer combos, Jari Mäenpää is the iconic epic metal frontman for the Finnish band Wintersun as well as Ensiferum in their early years from 1996-2004. Possessing a general vocal timbre that fits right in-between a baritone and a tenor, Jari is able to cover the whole gamut of necessary metal vocalization techniques all with considerable control and style. He has a vicious black metal sounding harsh vocal technique as well as a soaring belting register that blends rather seamlessly up to a piercing high metal scream tone in addition to a surprisingly deep sounding low register. Given the energetic and bombastic nature of his music it is no surprise that most of his time is spent either singing high or screaming in some way but his soft singing abilities are rather impressive too, with a performance like Loneliness (Winter) demonstrating this quite well. Definitely an underrated singer and one I'm glad to have chronicled on this site.
Credit goes to clem for the voice type idea.
