{Vocal Summary}Sam Cooke's voice is one that is clearly bred from the tradition of gospel singing, a tenor who could flip between sweet crooning and an impassioned grit with ease. Certainly Cooke's bread-and-butter were made on the former, as many of his most popular songs featured very light deliveries. Even those songs contained incredible resonance, however, and when Cooke allowed himself to let loose vocally (see "A Change Is Gonna Come" or some of his recordings with The Soul Stirrers), the listener is given access to a man who very rarely displayed his vocals at their fullest capability, and my, is it a sight to behold. It speaks to Cooke's abilities as a vocalist that he was able to create such an impact on the world of soul music in such a short time, even with his relatively conservative vocal approach.
