Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson
Voice Type: Soprano
Vocal Range: D3 - E6
{Background & Vocal Summary:}Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (known professionally as "Katy Perry") is an American singer-songwriter known for being extremely hot hits such as "California Gurls", "I Kissed a Girl" and "Roar". Katy grew up in a very religious family and this even influenced the sound of her debut record "Katy Hudson" which was released in 2001 to positive reviews but was ultimately a flop with 200 copies sold. She began touring and eventually adopted the stage name "Katy Perry", using her mother's maiden name. Before her breakthrough in 2008 she recorded background vocals on some songs, recorded songs for movies, etc. In 2008 the lead single for her next album (of what many prefer to call her proper debut) "I Kissed a Girl" was released and was a huge success reaching #1 in the US. She soon released the album it was on titled "One of the Boys" which received mixed reviews with her vocals being criticized by some. Before ending the era she released several other hit singles such as "Hot N Cold" and embarked on a small tour. In 2010 the lead single titled "California Gurls" was released from her next album and went to #1. The album "Teenage Dream" was released in August 2010 to mixed reviews with praise for the themes and production and criticism for her songwriting. Several other singles were released after such as "Teenage Dream", "Firework", "E.T." and "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)" and all of which reached #1 in the US, this made Perry the woman with the most Billboard Hot 100 #1s from a single album and tied with Michael Jackson with the most overall for his album "Bad". The album had a re-release titled "Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection" featuring the #1 single "Part of Me". She also embarked on the "California Dreams Tour" which was a huge success and filmed an autobiographical documentary titled "Katy Perry: Part of Me" to positive reviews. In 2013 she released her most recent album (as of now) "Prism" to mixed reviews with some praising her more mature and personal lyrical content with common complaints being that the sound was too safe and formulaic. "Roar" and "Dark Horse" both reached #1 (which means Katy has had 9 Billboard Hot 100 #1s so far) with the latter gaining much controversy due to the video. From 2014-2015 she embarked on the "Prismatic World Tour" and also performed at the Super Bowl XLIX halftime show in 2015. In 2016 she released a single called "Rise" for the Olympics which received positive reviews and in 2017 she released another single titled "Chained to the Rhythm" and she is currently working on her next album.
Katy's voice type has been a topic of discussion with some calling her a mezzo due to her strained highs, "dark" tone, etc. while others have called her a soprano for her weak lows, usage of highs more so than lows, more comfort singing highs, etc. although she's most likely a soprano. Katy has never really been known for having powerhouse vocals with her lower register being considerably weak although it is occasionally quite strong ("Boogerman", "White Christmas", "I'm Still Breathing") with her highs being decent up to like B4/C5 but above the strain begins and becomes dreadful above around E5 ("Whip My Hair") although she has shown the ability to deliver some lovely lower belts ("Whip My Hair", "Firework", "Rise", "Thinking of You"). Her falsetto is very sweet along and is very pleasant even if it's underused ("Hackensack", "Piercing") with a solid but unfortunately very underused head voice ("Double Rainbow"). Katy is known for being quite inconsistent live in terms of pitch, ability to stay on-key, etc. although can deliver solid performances. Overall, Katy is an inconsistent performer and overall an average vocalist who shows great potential which will only improve if she receives training.
