{Vocal Summary}Lene has a light, high soprano tone, used as effective contrast with fellow Aqua singer René Dif’s gruff baritone. Lene Nystrøm is a Norwegian singer-songwriter, famous as the lead vocalist of the Danish bubble-gum dance-pop band Aqua. Whilst working on a cruise ship in 1994, Lene was recruited to the Danish act Joyspeed. Following limited response to their first song, Joyspeed were rebranded as Aqua, and signed to Universal, where they enjoyed some initial success in Denmark and mainland Europe. However, it was third single, Barbie Girl, that really put Aqua on the map internationally, with worldwide sales of more than 8 million, achieving top 10 in multiple countries, and gaining a fair deal of controversy for its highly sexualised content. The band’s debut album Aquarium (1997) established their playful, irrelevant dance-pop style, although songs such as single Turn Back Time showed they were capable of producing more thoughtful ballads with strong melodies. Second album, Aquarius (2000), followed a similar vein, with a slightly broader range of styles.
Aqua disbanded in 2001, and Lene went on to release her only solo album, Play With Me, in 2003. Still suggestive in tone, this album had a rockier and darker edge than Aqua’s usual songs. In 2007, Aqua reformed, and a greatest hits album with some new material was issued in 2009. A third studio album, Megalomania, followed in 2011, with a greater mainstream dance appeal than the previous albums. Aqua continue to tour, and have now adopted more of a rock sound. Away from Aqua and her solo album, Lene has contributed backing vocals to several projects, and has been a mentor on both the Danish and Norwegian versions of The Voice.
