Gustavo Adrián Cerati (11 August 1959 - 4 September 2014)
Years Active: 1982 - 2010
Vocal Range: D2 - G5
{Vocal Summary}A quintessential figure in Latin American pop and rock music, and likely the most predominant exponent of Argentinian music, Gustavo Cerati is well known for his ecclectic and incessant drive to puruse new sounds. Bearer of the nickname "el Genio" (meaning the Genius), Gustavo was not only acknowledged as one of the better vocalists in spanish rock but also as a quality songwriter, producer, vanguard artist and virtuoso guitarist.
During his early career, with Soda Stereo, Gustavo's agile high range accompanied a skank-heavy new wave sound. His voice, much like the music he'd play, would be easy to place at a point perfectly in-between Sting and The Cure's Robert Smith. Although the mix-reliant, fryish-flavored high placed passages were the highlight, Gustavo's lower range was surprisingly rich, easily dipping to the upper second octave in more dynamically intimate numbers.
Later, during the nineties, this part of Cerati's range would begin to truly grow and stand out more, presumably due to his smoking habit. Colores Santos (1992), Amor Amarillo (1993) and Sueño Stereo (1995) make vast display of his refined crooning style, which better fit the shoegaze-influenced dream pop sound the band had grown into. With the eventual break-up of Soda Stereo, Gustavo embraces the baritone qualities of his voice and presses on with his croon-heavy approach for his earlier solo efforts.
Surprisingly enough, Cerati's higher range had barely lost any quality. Well into the second half of the 2000's, we see him tour his critically and commercially aclaimed record Ahí Vamos (2006) without any sign of struggle or weariness in his voice. The reunion tour Me Verás Volver in 2007 (which saw many stadiums and venues across the continent sell out) shows Gustavo's magistral growth as a singer and performer. With little to no loss to his high range, one could see him handle early Soda Stereo tunes without breaking a sweat, even under the strict touring schedule.
During the promotional tour of his last record, Fuerza Natural, Gustavo Cerati suffered a stroke and subsequent CVA in Venezuela. In 2014, after being in a coma for over four years, Gustavo Cerati passed away at the age of fifty-five, leaving behind a massive legacy.
