No one lyric from this that I love more than anything else, but Eric Whitacre's "The Sacred Veil" is such an unbelievably beautiful work of music. He wrote the music and set it to poetry by his friend, who had lost his wife to cancer a few years prior, and Whitacre even inserted some of his friend's wife's old poetry as well as some words of his own. The idea of the "sacred veil" as an image of mortality is so unique and interesting, and the writing is very moving. If I had to quote one bit, it would be this one. Whitacre himself said that this idea is "all the poetry we could possibly wish for when someone else loves us". It compliments the music wonderfully: And on that golden, hopeful day The boy was bold enough to say, “Come, hold my deepest secrets here among the foam; You are the world to me, and you... you feel like home.”The official programme scan is here if anyone is curious: ericwhitacre.com/wp-content/uploads/SIGCD630-Booklet.pdf

I've been getting into The Magnetic Fields lately, largely due to my appreciation of Stephin Merritt's brilliantly quirky lyrics. A few examples... From "My Only Friend" Hey Lady Day, can you save my life this time? Can you cry so beautifully you make my troubles rhyme? From "A Pretty Girl Is Like..." A pretty girl is like a violent crime If you do it wrong you could do time But if you do it right it is sublimeFrom "I Shatter" Should night not fall, you make things dark.{How Fucking Romantic (whole song - dont worry, its not very long)} How fucking roman-tic All the stars are out Twinkling twinkling twin-kling And fluttering about What a tacky sun-set What a vulgar moon Play another char-ming Rogers and Hart tune How fucking roman-tic Must we really waltz? Drag another cli-ché Howling from the vaults Love you obvious-ly Like you really care Even though you treat me Like a dancing bear Toss your bear a gold-fish As it cycles by Don't forget to feed your Bear or it'll die

I guess these could be described as "Otherwise Questionable".

Iron Maiden is quite a mixed bag of stuff Whilst it's not exactly profound, the lyrics to "The Trooper" are very descriptive. In terms of conjuring up the image of the battlefield, they are quite fit for purpose. {The Trooper}The bugle sounds, the charge begins But on this battlefield, no one wins The smell of acrid smoke and horses' breath As I plunge on into certain death The horse, he sweats with fear, we break to run The mighty roar of the Russian guns And as we race towards the human wall The screams of pain as my comrades fall In general that's kind of what Bruce's voice suits best, lyrically; telling a good yarn. Even when it's very tongue-in-cheek nonsense like "Dance of Death", I can picture the scene quite vividly. {Dance of Death}Let me tell you a story to chill the bones Out of thing that I saw One night wandering in the everglades I'd one drink but no more (officer I swear) I was rambling, enjoying the bright moonlight Gazing up at the stars Not aware of a presence so near to me Watching my every move Feeling scared I fell to my knees As something rushed me from the trees Took me to an unholy place That is where I fell from grace Then they summoned me over to join in with them At the dance of the dead Into the circle of fire I followed them Into the middle I was led As if time had stopped still I was numb with fear But still I wanted to go And the blaze of the fire did no hurt upon me As I steped onto the coals And I felt that I was in a trance And my spirit was lifted from me And if only someone had the chance To witness what happened to me And I danced and I pranced and I sang with them All had death in their eyes Lifeless figures, they were undead all of them They had ascended from hell "Empire of the Clouds" is quite possibly their best lyrical achievement, telling a more somber and poignant story this time. {Empire of the Clouds}She's the biggest vessel built by man A giant of the skies For all you unbelievers, the Titanic fits inside Drum roll tight her canvas skin, silvered in the sun Never tested with the fury, with the beating yet to come The fury yet to come
In the gathering gloom The storm rising in the west The coxswain stared Into the plunging weather glass
We must go now We must take our chance with fate We must go now For a politician, he can't be late
The airship crew awake for thirty hours at full stretch But the ship is in their backbone Every sinew, every inch She never flew at full speed, a trial never done Her fragile outer cover her Achilles would become An Achilles yet to come Then there was that one time Bruce dabbled in 80s metal S&M lyrics, and it really didn't suit him at all. A few points for referencing one of their older songs in "22 Acacia Avenue" (I like little self-referential things like that). But between the general crapiness of the lyrics, and Bruce leaning into that nasal snarly tone way too much on this track, "Hooks in You" remains one of my least-favourite Iron Maiden songs. {Hooks in You}I got the keys to view at number 22 Behind my green door there's nothing to see Is that a feature, what kind of creature Would hang around waiting for a guy like me? Stone cold sober and sitting in silence Laid back, looking for sympathy I like a girl who knows where she's bound I don't like girls who've been hanging around No big deal, no big sin Strung up on love, I got the hooks screwed in Hooks in you, hooks in me Hooks in the ceiling for that well hung feeling No big deal, no big sin Strung up on love, I got the hooks screwed in

Listening through some Sonata Arctica again, and rather than poke fun at how their English wasn't the best on the first album, or how Tony's metaphors are sometimes nonsensical, I'd rather give credit where it's due, and say: "White Pearl, Black Oceans" actually has a really good set of lyrics. It's a good story that drip feeds information to great effect, and I was quite engrossed reading the words, even without the music. In short: Lonely af lighthouse keeper hooks up with girl on New Year's Eve, which is her final night before she leaves town forever because she's not living her best life in her hometown. All goes well, but on the way back home, he gets seven shades knocked out of him by someone he can't see clearly because it's dark. When he finally regains consciousness, he realises he never made it back to the lighthouse in time. On returning to town, he learns that a ship of people died because he was not at his post. He also recognises the family name of a man (from his tattoo) who is for lynching him, and deduces he must be the girl's husband, and the one who beat him until he was unconscious. Anger issues husband just inadvertently killed his own wife, a bunch of other innocent people, and apparently his unborn child too, because he'd rather slap the head off a lighthouse keeper than actually sort his marriage out (he can't exactly be the best husband if his pregnant wife was for catching the first boat of the new year out of there). But they need someone to blame, and lighthouse boy runs for his life. He's found innocent by trial, because that was never going to stick. But nobody is going to look at him the same way, and the town will blame him forever. Lighthouse keeper forever alone, and that's a pretty good short story ngl. {White Pearl, Black Oceans lyrics}I was born and raised by the sea, shy yet proud, Learned to stay away from the crowd In my home, my lighthouse... 101 steps, round and dound New Years Eve, one night in the town Can change one life into eternity... All I could see, her eyes, We got caught in the moment, all of the night Taken beyond all lines, In silence leaving 'em all behind She had found the sails, for the following night The town, for her, was getting way too small She promised to be mine Forever, ... for that one night... Moments, passion, small defeats Concealed emotions, found in me "You gave life to a brand new me..." Crossing the wintry fields, The first hour of morning light Warmed by the flame inside, The lasting memory of the ending night I never had a chance to stop what hit me... What broke my bones and mauled me... After hours of deep, unwilling sleep... in a cold shelter Fell back in the dark, and the hours of the day passed... A nightmare awakes me, blinking light! There's no guide, blind ships in the night Oh blood red moon, eat away the night Darkness covers my lonely soul, No one to feed the dying light... Good morn', oh dreadful day, I prayed the moon had lit the sea instead of me... For the sails of night, "Please tell me everything's alright..." My voice in the room broke the silence, Everybody killed me with their eyes... What I was to hear made the people cry, Impossible for me to keep the tears inside "All on board the White Pearl have died, Coastal reef have tolled their lives And you are the light of the night..." One thing, I remember, before I fell on the ground... Although I never saw the face, A name was inked in his arm... Love can be like poetry of demons, or maybe God loves complex irony? The family name stated I had seen before... Written on her front door... "Silence in the courthouse!" A presence in the room, we both could feel The father of her unborn child and me All on board the White Pearl have died, Coastal reef have tolled their lives While I was the guide light... Back in my tower, run, run, run Light is out, I hope to see Black oceans beneath rise and swallow me One step will take me back inside, another sees my end No one can love a man who guarded the light, (Guarded the light, one faithful night) Flaming eyes I must confront before I am stated free Defining innocence is hell, after all that has past... Building new walls inside my eternal night... Although they took my heart and dried me up Sometimes I still bleed... Show me the way (show me the way) The light will show me a way on the grisly reefs Too many dead ends I see No soul can save me The respect I lost, the measure of a man... 10 000 steps down, round and round One night at the town and I'm hell bound Black oceans beneath come and swallow me All on the board White Pearl had died, Coastal reef come claim my life Black oceans beneath come and swallow me My little tower, seal my fate Help me pay back, end their hate Black oceans beneath come and swallow me One direction, down, down, down Pitch black night for my old town Black oceans beneath shall now swallow me "I hereby commit the body to the deep, To be turned into corruption Looking for the resurrection of the body, When the Sea shall give up her dead And the life of the world to come, through our Lord, Amen."

I think "Name" by the Goo Goo Dolls stands as one of the most complete set of lyrics I've ever heard in a song. There're are two lines that really stand out from it though.
Even though the moment passed me by I still can't turn away
Scars are souvenirs you never lose The past is never far
