Guano Apes to me are one of the best and most overlooked bands of the post-grunge/nu metal era when hip hop, alt rock, and metal were all colliding on a regular basis. Their songwriting and instrumental skills play a big role in that, but undoubtedly Sandra Nasić's raw voice is one of the most distinguishing aspects of their sound. Though initially most identified for her gritty belting and rapping style, Nasić was never averse to showcasing versatility as can be found on such tracks as "Rain", "Anne Claire" or "Pretty in Scarlet" where she uses a contrasting soft voice and a foreboding low register to great effect. After the band's hiatus, they returned with a more pop-oriented sound and fittingly Nasić's vocals have since become more bright and clear. Nonetheless, recent live performances reveal she is still fully capable of bringing down the hammer of grit when she wants to.
