The idea of this thread is a simple one, pretty much what it says on the tin:

1: Review the song submitted by the previous poster. It doesn't have to be a full, in-depth review, but just leave a couple sentences about what you liked and didn't like, what surprised you, etc. You can also give it a numerical score if you like.

2: Post another song for the person after you to review! It can be anything, really, though I'd recommend it be (a) not ridiculously long and ♭ not extremely well known- this thread is about exposing people to new, interesting music, after all!

as for my song, i am really digging This Linkin Park track

^ I prefer the older (and edgier) Linkin Park, so this song felt kinda boring to me for the most part, but the latter part was really great, especially the vocals. Liked the acoustic guitar too 7/10

Sinister melodies and larger-than-life production, and .Paak's harmony makes the entire song come together. The sample is the kind of loop that I never get tired of. Consecutive repeat listens abound.

This song is tight in pretty much every sense of the word- cool drum work in the intro, guitar and bass both have a really satisfying tone and great interplay, and the vocals are the sort of nervy, no-frills stuff that fits this style like a glove. Song doesn't really stick around long enough to tell a full lyrical story or really go anywhere, but if my only major complaint about a song is that there isn't more of it, I'd say that's a good thing. Kinda sounds like they're speedrunning a Gang of Four song. Light 8/10, would listen again.

Instrumental prog with dope musicianship, especially the keyboards. Also warning: the video has a lot of flashing lights, so keep away if you're sensitive to that sort of thing.

I'm not sure how I feel about the contrast of the heavy backing riffs against the light and proggy lead instruments. I also felt the lead guitar solos were a bit of a budget grade Paul Gilbert. The keyboards were alright though, and I liked the idea of the duelling back and forth between the keyboard and lead guitar. But during the climax of the song where they played together it didn't really gel.

A nice song. I feel like it definitely fits a certain mood that I'm very rarely in, so it's not really clicking for me. Listened to it twice now to give it a proper chance, but don't think I'll return to it (although I might also get randomly stuck in my head a week from now. Also very possible)

Interesting song on the whole! I like the bass work in the first half of the song- lot of very melodic stuff without ever forgetting to slot into the groove. Vocals are nice too; they're a bit of a more dramatic take on the usual indie-rock style, and I like the dude's tone.

My main issue with this is that it seems like six and a half minutes of buildup with no real payoff- as the groove slowly got more involved I was waiting for that moment when a big wave of guitars would come crashing in and the vocalist would really turn up the intensity, but it just sort of... never came? Given the length of the song, a bit more dynamic contrast and variation would have gone a long way. Still a fine listening experience though.

Poor BassSquared getting ghosted a second time :(

The progressive nature of the song is satisfying, with the vocal and instrumental ferocity continuously building up, and then resetting down in the final verse. My big criticism is that the singer's voice never hits the mark for me. She starts with the stereotypical female pop-ballad voice, then adds some quite masculine sounding grit in the middle choruses, then ends up quite shouty during the climax of the song.

^ Song with a very "dusky" feel to it, quite soothing in a lonely night such as this one. I'd say the weaker parts of the song come in the choruses, they don't seem very ambitious from a songwriting standpoint and I feel like it could've gone a different direction, I'm also not a fan of the harmonies, they don't stand out to me and it seems like they're there just for the sake of being there, I get that these two nitpicks could be a stylistical thing, maybe pertaining to the genre, but I don't know, like I said, these are the weaker points to me, pretty much everything else to me is top-notch: the intro with the synth and acoustic guitar, most of the verses, the solo and even the outro, all great. I'd give it a 7,7/10.

I used to be huge on this kind of sophisti-pop/smooth soul thing when I was 15-16. Nowadays I feel like there has to be some really bold and strong note choices and a really spicy chord progression for it to hold itself together for six minutes, and I feel like this song falls right into the trap of just being kind of pleasant to listen to but not really fulfilling as a song.

{Charley Patton - A Spoonful Blues}

Sounds like it would be a good track for a solo roadtrip. Production is understandably very much of its time, but entirely fitting for the song, and it's hard to imagine a more-polished version outdoing this one. The jangly guitar lines accompany the vocals well, without overshadowing them. Not super-engaging, but charming and listenable.
Overall, I'd put it in the B Tier. If this is what I had to listen to, I'd feel pretty good about it, even if it would be an unlikely choice of my own, if I could choose anything.

{Sunset Rollercoaster - Summum Bonum (Audiotree Live Version)}

I really enjoyed the bit from 1:58 through 2:36 and the last 40 seconds or so. The guys' sort of funk-styled musicianship really cuts through as the best part about the piece, particularly during those moments. The whole aesthetic seems very 'jazz for people who don't like jazz', which is fine in a longer set of songs, but I find that the most abrasive sounds in jazz - which this kind of music always does away with - are oftentimes the best. It needs something to contrast the eggshell smoothness, I guess is what I'm saying.

Starts off as standard 60's driving rock (the riff at 0:58 sounds really familiar to me (maybe reminds me of Bohemian Rhapsody a bit!?).Interesting tempo change at the 2 minute mark. The tribalistic vocals here are intriguing. Unexpected Bb5 at 4:00 hahhaha. My only complaint with the whole section from 4:00-6:00 is that at times it feels more repetitive than progressive. I kind of wish we got more of the heavy blues movement which lasted from 6:00-6:30. Finally of course we get a classic inhale scream from the period at 7:21!

that sounded awesome there was some very led zeppelin/black sabbath style vocals there's some Kashmir style drums some unexpected powerful G5's throughout and also, I think this song is not in 440hz kind of giving it a dreamy vibe in some way my only negative response About it is the guitar is some parts is bland and boring I wish there would more powerful guitar parts in it

{XTC - Towers of London (XTC Had Some Hits Outside of Us but I Think This Is One of Their Best Most Powerful Songs)}

Pretty great single by XTC. The production is crisp and clear yet edged enough, with a clanging hammer forming part of the percussion that fits in perfectly (Should've just had XTC perform Maxwell's Silver Hammer). The lyrics are very descriptive and thought provoking (though not preachy), dealing with idea of all the human sacrifice and labor that was put into making the titular "Towers of London". The bridge is my favorite part of the song personally. Very satisfying key switch and variation in melody. This isn't even one of my favorite Black Sea songs (I guess it feels a little...long? I don't know, pushing here), but still, a great song from a band brimming with energy and personality.

{Cooler Kids - All Around The World (Punk Debutante)}

At first I was like "oh no this is Vengaboys all over again" with the Ibiza reference but I surprisingly kinda liked it and it did get stuck in my head, which I think was the point. I really like that part from 2:12 to 2:30.
Also extra points just for the word "debutante" sounding really sexy in english for some reason, I honestly had never heard it like that, so 6,9/10. It's nice, not my type of music, but I might someday go back to it when I'm really high or something.

Lovely little piano ballad, not too many surprises on the whole but the violin bit around one minute in is absolutely gorgeous. The arrangement getting more involved halfway through is a nice way to keep things from becoming too stagnant, though her voice doesn't really get "big" the way I'm conditioned to expect it to in power ballads like this. That's not an entirely bad thing, mind- her tone is very pretty in that softer register. Overall a nice song, even if I didn't connect with it much emotionally (likely in part due to not understanding the lyrics).

Now for something a little higher energy...

I didn't really want to review the above song because I think it's just competent. The musicianship is obviously great, the break at like 1:58 was my favourite part and I wish they did more off-kilter melodies like that throughout the whole thing. The rest of the song is pretty poppy and I wouldn't complain if I heard it on the radio or something, but yeah there's not a lot of sharp edges to the song. I do like that even though it's pretty much a clichéd metal anthem the lyrics are worded in such a way that it's a little less cheesy in how it comes across.

Writing my thoughts as I listen! The sort of purring sound going from left to right has something either disturbing or satisfying. Pretty odd. When the percussions and vocals came in it felt heavenly, then when the guitars came in I was really feeling it haha. The rapping kinda reminds me of Gorillaz, it's expressive and captivating (edit: after investigating a bit, wait is that the same guy? That makes sense xD). The instrumental adding up at 1:32 is amazing, feels glorious and really serves the atmosphere of the song. It's really interesting how the chorus' melody is made. I'm not sure how to explain it, but the way the end kind of cuts off beat has something stimulating, if that makes sense? Okay 3:42 was an unexpected twist, it still makes sense but it's interesting how it didn't just repeat the first pre-chorus. Love the scratching and sampling in the back, the vinyl sound that's constant throughout the track is kinda pleasant too. And damn I really didn't see these 7 minutes go. That's a reminder I should listen to more hip-hop. Thanks for the share!

I really liked that one! It has a really nice sound to it and I especially like how the vocals pick up around 2:30. Her voice is nice, but I like it the most when she sings the higher notes. Overall, I'm not very familiar with this type of music, but I really like this song. (Sorry, I don't have much else to say other than the fact that I liked it)

I like it :)) Definitely sounds typical 80s instrumentally, the lovey-dovey song lyrics not especially memorable, but his voice was the greatest aspect. 🌠 It's quite amazing (since he was one of the Bee Gees) how the brothers maintained such versatile falsetto vocals as well as their natural lower voices. 

This next song was something I listened to for the first time just yesterday (and delved into songs by Eithne Ní Uallacháin only earlier this month). 💭

Reminded me of the anthemic folk songs you see on YouTube sometimes, if a lot more understated. I appreciate that it's a bit more anachronistic in feel to avoid the cheesiness of those modern bombastic offerings. It's very easy to listen to, even if it's more sentimental in mood than I tend to go for.

This sucks. Low budget obviously, but it's shot like it's a parody of something else. The stock footage of random animals is funny. The music is very subpar, and I find her voice to be very annoying. I'm sure there is a nice message behind it idk I don't understand the language. With all that said I respect it immensely and will probably listen to more from the group. Whatever that thing is in the background at 1:11 is flames :fire emoji:
