Jesse James Rutherford is an American singer best known for being the lead singer in The Neighbourhood. Early in his life, he was an actor and played minor roles in some movies. As a teenager, he started his career in music in a local rock band. He later formed a rapping duo with a friend, and after finishing an album, joined The Neighbourhood as the lead singer, where he sings to this day. He has an interest in rap and hip hop, which explains his solo style and some of the influence in his band’s music.
His vocal style is not generally very harsh, and he tends to sing with a softer style, very nicely showcasing his lower range. He seems very comfortable singing in the low third octave and very upper second octave, as shown here. Considering this, he sings in the upper fourth octave with surprising ease, and his low fifth octave belts are quite powerful. His falsetto, while decent, is not as strong as his chest voice. Spoken notes are occasional in his songs, given his periodic rapping in his songs.
{Vocal Timeline}2008: Jesse has a very harsh style of singing, and screams a lot in the songs he records, but other than that, his voice sounds surprisingly clear. No falsetto is shown during this time period, but his upper chest voice is very well displayed, especially his upper fourth and lower fifth octaves.
Example: "Self Control"
2011: Jesse appears on two mixtapes, rapping but also singing in his lower register, showing off his lower notes, even going down to the upper second octave. He rarely goes high, so there is little to no indication of change in his upper register.
Examples: "Therapy", "Opposite"
2012-2013: Jesse’s singing style is different for his band The Neighbourhood, sounding a lot more relaxed and not generally going higher than the mid-fourth octave. Some people will mistake him for a woman in songs such as "Sweater Weather", and "Female Robbery". He sometimes strays towards the lower third octave.
Example: "Sweater Weather"
2014-2016: Jesse’s voice begins to get thicker here, most likely due to his heavy smoking. Although, he is still able to sing in his upper register just as well as he could before. He sings in his head voice up to the low fifth octave here, but rarely pure falsetto.
Example: "Wiped Out!"
2017-2018: Jesse starts to use falsetto, but not past the lower fifth octave. Some of his questionable notes here indicate that he may be able to use falsetto to a higher extent. He has a harder time singing older songs like Sweater Weather, most likely due to his voice lowering from smoking.
