Steven Morrissey
Member Of: The Smiths (1982 - 1987)
Vocal Range: F♯2 - F♯5
{Vocal Summary}As lead vocalist for The Smiths, Morrissey has come to be instantly recognisable for his sarcastic wit and his on the nose lyrics. A notorious trouble-maker and controversy stirrer, he has been a constant influential presense in the indie-rock scene since the 80s.
Generally considered a low-ish placed singer, Morrissey displays very little desire to ever push himself above D4 in his chest voice and almost exclusively uses his distinct, yodel-esque falsetto above F♯4. HOwever, I'm not quite so sure I agree with the assessment that Morrissey's voice is actually all that low. His timbre, especially on The Smiths and early solo records, coupled with his strikingly limited range displayed in his lower register and inability to project 2nd octave notes effectively in a live setting, suggest to me that in reality Morrissey is likely a higher placed singer with a limited upper range. In his more recent solo outings, his producers have him on a pretty steady diet of autotune to ensure his voice is as distracting as possible.
