{Description}
Most known as the main voice and face of legendary English electronic music band Depeche Mode, Dave Gahan has established himself as one of the most iconic vocalists in pop music history. His strong, resonant mid-range baritone voice has inspired many a synthpop/new wave vocalist since his record debut in 1981, and have played an important part in solidifying the band's sound and style. Some of the most noticeable characteristics of his voice include his massive sounding middle and lower register, a powerful, often heavy sounding upper register, and an arresting, tonally rich delivery that crosses between dramatic and understated, bringing the most out of his performances whether they span different octaves or a few semitones.
Despite having gained some rasp and fluctuating in range between albums, Dave's voice hasn't changed much since he first started singing on record. Depeche Mode's first few records saw him singing quite comfortably from the upper 2nd to lower 4th octave, with founding member Martin Gore taking on the higher placed backing vocals (a dynamic present throughout all of Depeche's discography). Dave would usually reach into the mid-to-upper 4th octave quite confidently in songs ("Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "A Photograph Of You" being prime examples of this), with his vocal placement being not too different from Martin's. He would also use his lower register quite decently during this period ("The Landscape Is Changing", "Leave In Silence", "Everything Counts", etc.). Somewhere around Some Great Reward and Black Celebration, his higher register became slightly less prominent, with the 3rd and upper 2nd octave becoming his typical range for most songs. He still sang in the lower/mid 4th octave on some songs, with a bit of rasp starting to show in his voice ("People Are People", "Dressed In Black", "Sacred"), but his mid/lower range started to become more strong and noticeable. On DM's most acclaimed record, "Violator", Dave only reached the 4th octave on the song "Halo" ("Personal Jesus" possibly? Sounds a bit more like Martin though) while still providing some of his most iconic performances ("Enjoy The Silence", "Policy Of Truth", plus some dramatic and deep low notes on the album's closer "Clean". The band's next record "Songs Of Faith And Destruction" saw Dave's higher register return with an even more rugged sound than before, providing some of his most powerful performances (for instance, his heavy croon on "Condemnation", gritty, desperate belting on "Mercy In You" and potent E4's on "I Feel You").
After much personal turmoil, Depeche Mode returned with "Ultra", in which Dave returned to his trademark booming mid-range vocals, with a fair bit of 4th octave croons and belts (not as raw or frequent as on Songs Of Faith And Destruction) and strong upper/mid 2nd octave notes. This remained the standard for the group's next two albums, "Exciter" and "Playing The Angel". Some standout performances from this period include confident sounding upper-mid range vocals on tracks such as "It's No Good", "Shine" and "John The Revelator" and brooding low notes on tracks such as "Lilian", "Down" and "Sister Of Night", as well a rare usage of delicate falsetto vocals on "When The Body Speaks". Gahan also released two solo albums around this period, which saw him be a bit more ambitious with his vocals. This included further usage of upper 4th octave falsetto on songs such as "Dirty Sticky Floors", charismatic and dynamic performances in songs such as "Hidden Houses" and "Black And Blue Again", and a standout performance in "Deeper And Deeper". The aforementioned song features some of his grittiest, most well sustained upper register vocals to date, as well as some of his lowest notes during the song's outro.
By Depeche Mode's next album, Sounds Of The Universe, Gahan put his heavy upper register vocals on center stage, arguably moreso than ever before, with a large portion of songs on the album featuring prominent fourth octave vocals (such as "In Chains", "Fragile Tension", "Wrong", and "Peace", which included falsetto high Cs). Tonally, he continues to sound quite invigorated and bold (with a bit of leftover rasp), and has continued this streak of more frequent fourth octave vocals up to Depeche Mode's latest albums, "Delta Machine" and "Spirit", including songs such as "Should Be Higher" (side note: I legitimately thought Martin was singing that song's chorus the first time I heard it), "Heaven" and "You Move". His lower register hasn't seen any real change, remaining rather clear and strong down to the upper/middle 2nd octave when used (such as on his cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart", "Shock Collar", and an acoustic version of "Stories Of Old"). His more recent live performances/covers have also showcased his regained strength with high notes, as well as some infrequent yet surprisingly resonant 5th octave falsetto notes (such as on DM's magnificent cover of "Heroes", or during a live performance of "Halo" at Bilbao in 2013). Also worth noting, his two albums with production duo Soulsavers feature vocal experimentation similar to his previous solo albums, but with the previously mentioned higher register increase ("Gone Too Far", "I Can't Stay", "In The Morning").
In short, Dave Gahan has solidified his position as one of the most beloved deep voiced singers in popular music, bringing Martin Gore's compositions of faith, addiction, lust and love to life with his powerful vocals, as well as through his attention catching solo releases, side projects and features. 40 years in as a singer, he remains active and his work remains beloved by fans around the globe who just can't get enough of his music.

{Questionable Notes}
Dave does a lot of exclamations and quick yelps during live shows, and I'd be here all day if I counted them all, so I'm just acknowledging them (they're usually upper 4th octave shouts, sometimes 5th octave shrieks) and moving on. I'm willing to count more controlled sung live notes and yelps though
G♯5 ("Enjoy The Silence [live version from Incoherent Scream 2017]" [4][5], "I Held My Baby Last Night" [1])
D5 ("Leave In Silence" [1], "Stand Up" [2])
C5 ("New Life" [5])
B4 ("You Owe Me" [2])
G4 ("The Desperate Kingdom Of Love" [2])
G♯2 ("Nothing To Fear" [2])
G2 ("Nodisco!" [2][4])
E2 ("Shut Me Down" [5])
E♭2 ("Down" [4])
[1] marks yelps and short trills in high range or anacrusis and short dips in low range.
[2] marks notes of questionable identity that cannot be confirmed to be the singer in question.
[3] marks non-melodic notes that don't have a significant enough pitch to warrant inclusion.
[4] marks notes that possess uncertain pitch or have been pitch-shifted.
[5] marks notes that do not fit the previous criteria but are not of a substantial enough quality to warrant counting towards the singer's range.
