Melvin Howard Tormé (13 September 1925 - 5 June 1999)
Years Active: 1929 - 1996
Vocal Range: D2 - B♭5
{Vocal Summary}A singer, composer, arranger, and instrumentalist, Mel Tormé is a staple in the jazz field.
Nicknamed The Velvet Fog, Tormé possessed a very smooth tenor with a well-developed mezza voce. This allowed Tormé to muster a sort of tenderness in his vocals that hasn't been seen very often outside of his voice. In studio, this was generally the focal point of his singing for a long time; throughout his early recording career, Tormé would normally stick to his midrange and adhere to the material he was singing relatively strictly and with very clear diction, a la Bing Crosby. However, emblematic of a jazz singer, another large part of Tormé's draw is his ability to improvise around any given song on-the-fly with great ease and fluidity. These improvisations may be something as subtle as slight, unique changes in his phrasing of a passage or as intense and captivating as his scat singing, the likes of which rival Ella Fitzgerald. These are seen more often throughout his later career, most prominently in his live performances.
Tormé is notable for his vocal consistency throughout his career. He was comfortable belting into the mid-upper 4th octave and maintained a resonant head voice that spanned well into the 5th octave, with both areas barely diminishing with age if at all. His lower range was comparably underdeveloped, coming off as a bit airy and losing resonance below the upper 2nd octave, but what was there was consistent as well. He remained a very high-profile performer up until 1996, with his final shows in that decade sounding of someone who only got better with age.
Overall, though not as remembered nowadays as other jazz singers, Mel Tormé still continues to go down as one of the best vocalists jazz has to offer and quite the unique one at that.
