Mark Sandman was quite the unlikely rock frontman. He came from a working class, blue collar background and didn't release an album until his mid 30s, which undoubtedly influenced his signature brand of "low rock" that often conjures imagery of urban nightlife. He is most known as the slide bassist and singer for Morphine, who became 90s indie rock cult icons with their unique blend of unorthodox instrumentation and chill, jazz flavored soundscapes. Since Sandman's 2 string slide bass, relaxed baritone croon, and Dana Colley's baritone saxophone were such defining characteristics of their sound, Sandman once summed it up by saying "we're just baritone people." And indeed, his vocal approach recalled the sort of lower register coolness that makes me think more of a Steve McQueen type character than a singer. Though he would occasionally sing lower into the traditional bass range or let out a good melodic shout, his mid-range oriented approach reigned supreme and allowed his poetic and off-kilter lyricism to be appropriately emphasized. Tragically, he passed away onstage in 1999, but his impact on the history of underground music maintains its significance to this day. Long live the Sandman!
