{Description}
English musician, singer, producer and video artist Chris Corner has realized his musical ambitions through his genre defying solo musical project IAMX, as well on his earlier work as founding member of electronic music group Sneaker Pimps. Starting out with a more bleak and downbeat yet expansive take on trip hop fused with rock and symphonic music influences on Sneaker Pimps, Chris, in his own words, “became X” and started his solo musical project IAMX in 2004. His work with the project displayed a more synthpop inspired style that has crossed across a diverse array of styles and genres, including cabaret, dance music, ballads, rock and industrial electronic. Featuring grander compositions, a larger display of vocal range and more direct, assertive ruminations on topics such as sex, identity, politics, religion and mental health (among others), IAMX has remained one of the most successful underground electronic music acts in recent history. Further enhanced by his sleek, androgynous image, darkly inspired music videos/promotional imagery and vivid, tightly paced live performances, Chris’ dedication to his craft and image is felt across his work, and with his music feeling as if it exists in a world of its own.
Arguably the most noticeable feature of Corner’s music is his voice, boasting powerful belting, a well-developed falsetto register and hushed, seductive crooning. His initial phase as lead vocalist of Sneaker Pimps didn’t feature the extensive highs of his solo material, although his mid-set tenor vocal range made his usage of hazy middle 4th octave crooning and occasional belting (“Blue Movie”, “Superbug”, “Small Town Witch”) quite comfortable. It also featured a bit more focus on his lower register, sounding stable yet dark around the lower 3rd octave and upper 2nd octave.
Once we get to his IAMX debut, Kiss + Swallow, many changes are notable. His sparsely used falsetto register sees more frequent and solid usage (“Mercy”, “You Stick It In Me”, all time highest notes on “I-Polaroids”), upper 4th octave belts are present in most songs and his delivery has a more impassioned, at times erotic aura to it. This continues to be the trend throughout his discography. His head voice has actually grown fuller sounding since his debut, with songs such as “Happiness”, “Anger Is An Acid”, “Surrender” and “Aphrodisiac” featuring somewhat full sounding, Bellamy-esque high falsetto notes. His belting register is no slouch either, sounding consistently clear up to tenor B♭, and overall extending up C♯. His tone can range from direct and clean (“Happiness”, “Mile Deep Hollow”, “Break The Chain”) to more distorted and shouty with a desperate delivery (“Oh Cruel Darkness Embrace”, “Volatile Times”, “Aphrodisiac”), depending on the song (though his high notes around B to C♯ seem to fall more into the distorted area). Not much has changed regarding his lower register, other than it becoming less frequently used but usually more weighty when used. 9 studio albums in under his solo project, Chris remains one of the most provocative, emotive pop musicians of the current day.
