Rob Sowden's tenure as lead vocalist for cult English neo-prog rockers Arena marked a significant development in their identity as a band. Prior to his arrival in 1998, they were acclaimed as songwriters and musicians but were still struggling to find a vocalist that could distinguish them from the Gabriel and Fish obsessed scene they came from. Sowden's arrival bucked this trend, as he had the level of theatricality a band of their style desired yet he also had a raspy, soulful quality that made their music feel more grounded and approachable to a wider audience. The combination of his emotive baritone vocal approach and the band's complex yet hooky music paved the way for three of their most acclaimed full lengths, plus a solid smattering of EPs and live albums. Alas, after 12 years at the helm he left the band due to musical differences and sought out new paths in his career. He's worked as a live sound engineer, a DJ, a musical daycare performer, and a singer-songwriter solo artist all while also fronting his own alternative rock group Solar on the side. Though us prog fans are sad to see him go, it's good to know that he hasn't lost his passion for music and will every now and again pop up with a new release to remind us that he hasn't lost so much as a step with age.
