I don't know if that changes anything on what you think but I've been listening to that recording and redoing the pitches on piano for some long time, and in conclusion I'm almost 100% sure that F#2 is real

Mezzo-soprano would be my guess, but I don't really listen to her music much so I'm not very qualified to speak on this topic.

Soprano turned mezzo in the last 5-10 years or so. Not sure about the timeframe, I really don't listen to her recent stuff that much

Probably longer tbh. Even as early as Emancipation and E=MC^2 she had some inordinate lows and some rasp to her middle belts. By the 2010s she fit as mezzo for sure. Even “Obsessed” (2008?) has her sounding full and husky, and features background B♭2s

Coming back to this since it's always sort of been on the back of my mind, that seems... not to be the case with this thread? The key calls blue notes "falsetto or whistle passages", and notes like the bolded blue G5 from You Don't Know What to Do and the A5 from All I Want for Christmas are falsetto, no? If anything the note I brought up is even more airy than those blue ones, and I don't think I see any other bolds around there that are treated as black either

I'm gonna add to that a little bit because fuck it I have the time. Most of the time with Mariah's airiest high notes she's just pushing her larynx up and choking her head voice as tightly as she can. That is hardly what I would call falsetto; it's more of a dragged-out, thin head voice from what I can tell. Flageolet is generally not airy, because somewhat counterintuitively it is connected to your mixed voice as opposed to your head voice — you can't even really make it to that register by pushing a lot of air. More like you have to conserve as much air as you possibly can.

The way I determined what is blue and what is not was by listening to how disconnected the note sounded from the regular chest-to-head bridging that Mariah does and whether it sounds like it has a sort of 'open' vowel in the throat. When you run through your mix on an open vowel and with enough support you can generally crack into that flageolet register, and falsetto works a bit differently from that. Falsetto I think of as just head voice but you're basically abandoning the support of your chest voice completely.

The key might be slightly incorrect with that in mind, but I'm kind of averse to saying 'flageolet' anyway because that's hardly a common term that anyone casually browsing vocal ranges would know. Whether I made the right call on those notes is a different story and those can obviously be addressed one at a time if anyone feels like they want to link and discuss them.
