I'm not convinced smoking has that dramatic of an effect on one's voice either. It affects different singers in different ways. Some don't change all that much. But Leonard Cohen had a pretty normal man voice, in terms of placement and timbre, at the start of his career. By the 1980s, his voice was noticeably quite a lot deeper and darker than most guys.
