Michael Steven Bublé (9 September 1975 - present)
Years Active: 1994 - present
Voice Type: he's a baritone.
Vocal Range: E♭2 - F5
{Vocal Summary}I had an absolutely scathing criticism of a vocal summary ready for this thread. I wrote it before I had completed most of the thread, mainly out of wanting an excuse to not listen to Bublé's music. But I've wrapped this up now and Bublé has left me feeling more depression than disdain. The man cannot, even now, decide what his vision is musically. He finds himself shooting for the 1950s, the 1960s, the 1970s, and the 2010s, and what's more is he falls flat each time. Now, it is this threadmaker's opinion that he should be aiming for the lattermost era; he's a serviceable pop singer. Any moments I'll be revisiting after this thread's posting will be the ones reflecting a modern attitude towards songwriting and arrangement. These moments are the Bublé I'll reasonably want to listen to. But the truth of the matter is a lot harder to swallow, at least for me.
Bublé is a crooner. At least, that's how he presents himself. His attire, most of his songs of choice, his live orchestra backing, it all screams something. Say it with me: Sinatra. Bennett. Crosby. Hell, even Presley. These are his inspirations and he wears them on his sleeve, but that in and of itself is not the issue. The issue comes when, much like Greta Van Fleet and rock music, Bublé artistically accepts this notion that he is the renaissance of traditional pop. A successor to the Rat Pack. The man to make crooning "work" in the 21st century. I've danced around it long enough; his voice has not and does not reflect this. At all. How he slurs his words. The strange way he spreads his vowels in every corner of his range. His, at times, unnatural-sounding tone, an issue likely perpetuated by his relatively obvious use of auto-tune. He is a modern pop singer in a trad pop world, and it's far from a joy.
So what now? What's next for Michael? As disappointed as I am to say this, probably more of the same. It's safe to say he's carved out his niche; even now, his albums remain standards-dominated. I would recommend he explore those other genres he flirts with more in-depth, but I doubt he'd be so inclined. And in that case, I'd recommend he more closely examine what makes his idols so great. But again, he's already made it big. He has no reason to change, and that's what pains me.
