Jacob Bannon (born October 15th, 1976)
Associated Acts: Converge (1990-Present), Supermachiner (1994 - 2000), Wear Your Wounds/Solo (2017 - Present), Umbra Vitae (2019 - Present), Blood from the Soul (2020 - Present)
Vocal Range: C♯2 - G♯5
Vocal Type: When ForTenor Comes Crashing
{Vocal Summary}Jacob Bannon is a vocalist that even if you've only heard once, you're sure as hell never going to forget - though probably not for reasons that would usually pop up in the previously mentioned statement with positive connotations.
It's more the fact that once you hear the opening few seconds of Converge's Jane Doe, ear piercing screech riding over the top of a round of instruments that sound more like malfunctioning industrial machinery will burn a painful hole in your mind and your ear canal and stay there. Whether you're into that is up to you, but once you've heard it you cannot unhear it. And if you were unlucky enough to be tricked into listening to it on full volume you'll be lucky if you can hear at all.
Bannon's vocals are the centerpiece of the band responsible for creating the most enjoyable clusterfuck of abrasive mess since guitar amplifiers were invented: Converge. Whilst the band's sound is already chaotic to-the-max, Bannon's vocals add this extra layer of manic insanity that arguably gave the band its trademark sound. Most of the time you'll find Bannon doing his best take on what Satan's pet Velociraptor would sound like when fighting a machine gun. It's not the BEST technique for screaming and it's only gotten darker, crunchier and more throat dredge-y overtime but it's sure as hell distinct as a vocal style and even though Bannon has admitted to it literally giving him scar tissue on his throat there is no way that it's going to stop permeating every speaker of every venue Converge ever goes to in the future.
In terms of actual singing, Bannon may not also have the best idea of what a solid melody is but he sure as hell knows how to utilise his pained yelping in a way that gives off the same pained vibes as his screams without sounding like he's coughing up blood and ash in the process. He also possesses an incredibly strong lower register. No one has any idea how he's able to sit so comfortably in the low second octave and even sing entire songs within that register (even far before the great phlegmification of his vocal cords he was still busting out E2s on songs like no-one's business) but a deal with the devil himself isn't off the table.
No matter what you think of all of this and no matter his somewhere in between "what the fuck" and "how" levels of technical ability stand, Jacob Bannon definitely will not be confused for any other metalcore vocalist. If there's anything he's going to get confused between it's a stabbing victim - so if you're going to get stabbed it's probably best not do it near a Converge show.
