Eric Clapton is one of those singers who only initially began singing out of necessity, like many other guitarists. When pressured to sing on Blind Faith's only album, he was reluctant to do so due to being unsure of his voice, but even after many years of singing, has only recently stated that he likes it, because of the "old man" quality to it. He's never been one to experiment, overstretch himself, or be showy with his voice, probably due to being unhappy with it, he only uses controlled singing, with no recordings coming up showing any random screams or whistle notes. However, even after years of alcohol and drug abuse, his voice is very intact, being able to achieve both his famous gritty tone, and the softer singing heard on 'Tears in Heaven'.
