{Vocal Summary}
In the world of Christian rock, most bands tend to either go two ways, soft and worshipful and some go hard and heavy. Oregon native Jon Micah Sumrall of the dual rock band Kutless is definitely one that has been doing both for years. His band has been both acclaimed and criticized for not staying to one or the other in terms of wanting to be either soft or heavy but all in all in either side of the band’s sound he does bring something unique to the table. He is a smooth baritone who in his early career tried to sound similar to the likes of the grunge singers at the time like Eddie Vedder which most of the time his voice didn’t sound all the genuine which thankfully dropped it on the second album, Sea Of Faces. His voice tends to sound very emotive and calm for the most part singing as if giving someone a sermon or a simple word of advice. In some of the early tracks he alos had moments of screaming mostly very smoothly and sometimes raspy and usually the screams were very high to almost the mid fifth octave. Also around the mid part of his career, he started to feel more comfortable with belting higher notes more comfortably as well as the use of falsetto both in his main and background vocals. His low range while not as common as his highs are also very good as he does bring the more introspective mood when he uses it as if to reflect on what he is singing about. Whether heavy or not, Sumrall has given something that many admit is meditative music for the soul and it seems that he still has plans on keeping on using his voice to enlighten any listener with food for thought.
