Symphony in metal always sounds epic and there are lots of vocalists that mesh well with that style. Hailing from Illinois, Josh Ditto of the symphonic metal band Hope For The Dying is one of those vocalists whose voice can go well with the epicness found with metal that sounds like it’s being orchestrated. Ditto mainly screams in many styles from the metalcore punk phlegm, to death growls and even blackened shrieks all done sometimes in the same song within seconds. He has a lot of control with his texture when he screams and compared to others sounds very organized in the structure of the usage of his unclean vocals. Apart from that Ditto also sings melodically and his voice is equally well managed with his progressive cleans sounding similar to the likes of James LaBrie (in his prime) and even Devin Townsend, switching his vocal filter from singing cleanly to a distorted gruff singing. His lower range however is rarely used, usually during more moody moments and not touching the second octave at all. Nevertheless, Ditto is still a great vocalist nonetheless with a lot of skill with his vibrato and a lot of strong presence in these heavenly melodic battle anthems.
