Joel Gustav Ekelöf (1980-present)
Associated Acts: Willowtree (2000 - 2010), Soen (2010 - present)
Vocal Range: G♯2 - E5
{Vocal Summary}
Though he had been singing for nearly a decade with little-known Swedish rock group Willowtree, Joel Ekelöf made a significantly larger impact as frontman for Soen, a progressive metal band boasting such big names as ex-Opeth drummer Martin Lopez and journeyman bassist Steve DiGiorgio. The group garnered numerous comparisons to Tool in its early days, and Ekelöf's voice was certainly a part of such associations. His placid, midrange croon combines the calmer elements of both Maynard James Keenan and Mikael Akerfeldt, with entire verses often being sung in the space of less than half an octave. His emotive belting, however, is a sound more his own, propelling Soen's big choruses with a sound that is climactic but never too showy. He also distinguishes himself with his heavy use of close vocal layering and his forays into his resonant, lovely falsetto. Though his voice is not particularly high-placed, his low register is sorely underused; his voice seldom bothers to descend into the second octave despite the fact that notes in that region sound fairly comfortable for him. Nonetheless, he fits Soen's music perfectly, and is a fine example of a singer who doesn't need extravagant showcases of range or technicality to sound great.
