{Background & Vocal Summary:}Ellie Goulding is an English singer-songwriter known for hits such as "Lights", "Love Me Like You Do" and "Burn". She was signed to Polydor Records in 2009 and began co-writing songs for other artists and was occasionally featured on some songs. Her debut album titled "Lights" was released in 2010 to positive reviews despite some labelling the album as generic and she soon reissued the album later in the year as "Bright Lights" which featured perhaps her most well known song "Lights" along with several other tracks including a cover of Elton John's "Your Song". Following the release of both, she performed at several festivals before beginning to work on her next album. Her follow-up album titled "Halcyon" was released in 2012 to positive reviews with particular praise towards her vocals and the production with it often being regarded as her best album to date. Like her previous record, she also reissued the album as "Halcyon Days" in 2013 featuring the hit song "Burn". She was featured on "I Need Your Love" with Calvin Harris which enjoyed much commercial success and she made appearances on other songs and soundtracks. Her third album titled "Delirium" was released in 2015 to positive reviews with her vocals receiving much praise. The album also featured some of her biggest hits such as "Love Me Like You Do" and "On My Mind". In 2016 she stated that she was taking a break from music but the year after, she began performing again and she is likely working on her next album.
Ellie is a fairly obvious soprano, with a soft voice that can be off-putting to some. Despite being a soprano, she seems to be fairly comfortable singing low and isn't afraid to reach into the lower extremities of her voice ("The Wolves", "Closed For Love", "Slow Down"). Belting isn't always her forte as she can sound very coarse and raspy to the point where she sounds unpleasant. Although she can still pull off some solid belts ("Summit", "Still Falling For You", "Army") despite this. Ellie's head voice is perhaps the best part of her voice with her showing great comfort and strength here and sometimes sounding unrecognizable ("All I Want", "Intro (Delirium)", "Mirror"). Unfortunately, she can be inconsistent live occasionally.
