Joshua Keeler Ramsay (11 June 1985)
Years Active: 1999 - Present
Associated Acts: Marianas Trench (2001 - Present)
Vocal Range: E♭2 - B♭5
{Vocal Summary/Bio}
With his high-placed voice, irrepressibly energetic and charismatic stage presence, and uncanny ear for catchy hooks, Canadian singer-songwriter and Marianas Trench frontman Josh Ramsay seems like a natural fit for pop stardom. However, beyond the shiny, hair-dyed veneer is a genuine, ambitious talent that goes well beyond simple bubblegum. Whether in the form of his band's layered, tightly orchestrated approach to pop-rock or his clear dedication to pushing himself vocally with every successive album, there is a clear "more is more" mentality that pervades much of his music.
Starting off as a fairly standard, emo-tinged pop-punk tenor, his voice matured along with Marianas Trench's sound, swiftly adding powerful belts into the fifth octave and attaining far greater control and smoothness over his previously unrefined vocal timbre. His clear, agile falsetto is also a strong asset, providing a sweet-sounding counterpart to his more raspy belted highs in both lead and harmony work. And while his low register is admittedly underutilized, some more recent tracks such as The Killing Kind show that his second octave is actually quite decent-sounding for someone of his placement, though most of Marianas Trench's lowest harmonies are still unlikely to be his doing. One of pop-rock's more talented figures to be sure.
