Second in endurance only to his influence, Prince's vocal approach, though based in pop, featured much edgier sounds compared to your usually squeaky clean R&B crooner. All the way from heavy, warm low notes to his signature soaring falsetto, also frequently going for throaty distortion and experimenting with raw whistle sounds on top, Prince had all the range of a freakishly technical powerhouse while not losing a shred of the visceral emotion he poured onto every track, Despite not having much of a belting register to speak of, if you wanted to describe Prince's vocals as 'making the best of what he had', you'd have to say he had a lot.

With all of these factors in mind, the core of Prince's vocal approach was undoubtedly passion; passion for religion, sex and art that he compounded with an ambitious, yet rough-around-the-edges take on his vocal range. Prince's flaws complementing the bigger picture as opposed to staining it, his technical prowess served only as a tool to express the emotions one may lack the voice to uncover. In this sense, it is not hard to see why his artistry resonates with so many people, and you may rest assured that Prince's orgasmic cries will echo throughout musical landscapes, his Rainbow Children making sure the original won't be forgotten any time soon.

I know I made a fool of myself by once upon a time suggesting his F#6 was inhaled, but that C7 sounds like..... like a robot being beat to death with a baseball bat, I am not sure how it is countable in a musical sense. Also is there a chance it could be a strained C6? It doesn't have the piercing quality one would expect from a 7th octave note.

well the B6 is followed by a scale down to a sustained note, maintaining pretty much the same tonality throughout. the C7 is a squeeze and its descent down is not a smooth, connected glissando

Sure, but since he's bridging down to his falsetto it'd make sense for you to hear a register break in the C7 as opposed to the B6. The thing is, I'd rather just spoiler both notes if we're cracking down on how he bridges down from them, since neither of them demonstrate any sort of competent ability to do that.

On the other hand - if we're just concerned with them as notes - you don't think holding a B♭6 and a C7, both being in key, within 10 seconds of each other is demonstrating a sense of control?

I'd agree with Baronessa as to the showcase of his passaggio control in that area, although both the B♭6 at 3:22 and the C7 at 3:30 sound quite painful.

While I see your point of view, I cannot shake the feeling that a glissando from C7 (whistle/flageolet) to F6 (falsetto) through the passaggio is indeed a showcase of control, despite its squeaky quality. In my opinion, the forum seems to have the tendency nowadays to be somewhat over analytical as to including/excluding notes based on their quality, rather than their audibility, relevance in the musical context...
