John Cameron Fogerty (28 May 1945)
Member Of: The Blue Velvets (1959 - 1964), The Golliwogs (1964 - 1967), Creedence Clearwater Revival (1967 - 1972)
Vocal Range: G2 - A5
{Vocal Summary}From primarily a guitarist and backing singer to the voice of a generation, John Fogerty initially started his career in the shadows of his brother Tom's projects but quickly became more comfortable in his own pipes and evolved to eventually outshine his brother as the defining singer-songwriter of Creedence Clearwater Revival. While his flanger-laden guitar chops drove the arrangements, John's earthy rasp complemented the band's image as the working class' answer to technicolour-ridden psychedelia that dominated rock 'n' roll at the time.
Low notes easy though few and far between, true to the stylings of '50s rock pioneers, John's prime consisted mostly of unrelenting rasping in the upper fourth octave with harshly distorted screams that occasionally embellished CCR's tight instrumental breaks; a style that evolved into a more nuanced, cleaner approach as John's solo career post-Creedence went on. Multiple hiatuses brought on by legal disputes and familial friction, John perhaps didn't get to explore his absolute prime as much as many fans undoubtedly craved, but his existing artistry is more than enough to satisfy any swamp rock fan for a lifetime. If you can belt out "Bad Moon Rising" and make it sound like something one would want for their wedding, and still be recognized as one of rock's greatest singers, you know you have little to prove to the world anymore.
