Quite deliberately enhancing his androgynous image, Brett's signature is definitely his highly affected vocal twang, perhaps being the prime cultivator of his image as a 'wide-ranging' voice despite not being a highly technically skilled singer. There is a definite contrast between Brett's highs and his lows, the former being nasal and at times even yodeling while the latter - though more seldom used - always sounded dark and brooding despite Brett never singing awfully low for his vocal placement. This effect of Brett gaining fame for his almost whiny belts and feminine, easily accessible falsetto while also being able to sing low when he wanted to, arguably enhanced Suede's sexually ambiguous image.
After his initial departure from Suede, throughout his solo career Brett has indulged more in genuinely low notes, and generally seemingly has learned to utilize his voice in more versatile ways apart from contrasting different tones. Even nowadays, Brett seems to be evolving as opposed to degrading as a singer, Suede's comeback albums hosting some of his most technically intensive singing yet, such as much higher belting with a much more rounded tone than during his initial run in Suede. It is definitely encouraging to witness his lowest and highest notes all coming from his most recent projects, and despite having passed his heyday Brett manages to come through with more progress and artistic evolution in the present day.
