Though Boston art-prog group Bent Knee bill themselves as a "democratic collective", the unique, erratic vocals of frontwoman/keyboardist Courtney Swain often can't help but seem like the music's focal point. Known for her ability to go from quiet, understated crooning to explosive, wailing vocal acrobatics at the drop of a hat, her voice has become somewhat more restrained and tasteful compared to her more histrionic early career, though she still pulls off difficult vocal lines regularly and with ease. A clear soprano, her piercing, siren-like highs comfortably cover the entire fifth octave with room to spare, and though her lows are often quiet and soft, she's capable of putting in some power there as well every once in a while. Overall, a powerhouse vocalist who sounds good over the entirety of her three-octave range, and who is likely capable of even more.
