Let's face it, nobody sounds quite like Andi Deris. Despite possessing a powerful raspy high range and a strong vibrato, he is far from your usual power metal vocalist. As the longest serving frontman of Helloween, his eccentric and risk-taking vocalizations helped push the German legends past the difficult Chameleon era of their career into one of modern metal's most beloved giants. Early on in his career, his 5th octave was tremendously well developed and many of his Pink Cream 69 performances had melody lines that were constantly sitting in the D5-E5 area, something he showed no trouble with reproducing live. Going into Helloween, he started to dirty up his tone a bit more and adapt his vocal style so that it included numerous lower and mid range sections to compliment his still formidable high register. It's notable that this shift away from a soaring approach into a more aggressive delivery helped to distinguish his era of Helloween from his predecessors. Though his tessitura has lowered in the last 10 years and his live performances are more hit or miss, his quality of tone and vocal enthusiasm remains untarnished after over 3 decades in the business. As one of the few truly unique singers in modern metal, Deris is a personal favorite of mine and one of the most underrated in the genre.

That's because he hasn't been drinking/smoking as much, and got into better shape.  On the Pumpkin's United tour Kiske got sick and hurt his voice too.  This resulted in Deris having to cover for Kiske during the entire set.  I think it was a bit of a wakeup call for him.  Also, do you have timestamps on the two questionable A5s?  More curious about the one on Hocus Pocus considering that's mostly just yodelling.  If the other one actually has lyrics I wouldn't even add it if it doesn't add anything to the song if he actually did hit it.

Went ahead and updated the thread with all the notes I posted above, including that new studio song "We Are Real" that celioman posted back towards the beginning of the year. The only thing is that there's lots of interplay between Deris and Kai Hansen on that one, and at a few points I lose track of who's singing which parts. I heard A4s, B4s, and a C♯5 by Deris that I added to the thread, but Zedd Squared and Rodney Blazershorts you both might wanna check that one out.

Anyway, the only two notes that I need help with from the batch I posted above are some lows from a couple of the performances of "Halloween".

I'm pretty sure this spoken part is darkened third octave that's done in a way to sound like second octave (a la Dave Mustaine), but figured I'd double check to make sure.


I originally had this slide pitched as getting down to B♭2, but then relistened to it and thought I heard A♭2, but now I'm not sure if that might be getting into nanonotewatching. I also hear something kinda growly after that sounds like it could be Deris continuing the slide lower, but it seems kinda iffy - perhaps it's one of the guitarists doing a dive bomb with their whammy bar instead? Could definitely use some help on this one in general.

That first one sounds like it gets to a solid F2 on "I'll show you passion and gloryyYY" to me, though the main spoken line before that is growly 3rd octave yeah. I do also hear the slide in the second clip getting pretty solidly to A♭2.

I dunno if I would call that lower note you're hearing in the first clip "solid" - I think I hear it touching on something in that range, but it sounds pretty exhaley to me and like something that would probably belong in the spoiler. Coming back to that one I'm thinking I'd say it's countable down to B♭2/A2.

As for the second one, I kept going back and forth between B♭2 and A♭2, but yeah A♭2 might be right. That "lower note" I was hearing was indeed one of the guitarists doing a whammy bomb, now listening back to it.

Alsoooo, I think both of this guy's A5s are passable as non-spoiler notes... :whistling:

This one is definitely a solid slide up to a high note, it's just a question of whether it's worth counting as an A5. The main slide sounds like it goes from C4 to G♯5, and then very briefly touches on A5 at the end of the G♯5, so I could maybe get on board with calling it a G♯5 and calling the A5 questionable. But yeah, should definitely be counted as something.


This one is definitely an italicized note (as it's a 'woo!'), but it's one that seems like it has enough musical intent and purpose as part of the song/vocal phrase to me. If you listen to the sung G♯5 before it, you can hear how it's literally the same technique and tone as that, so it's sort of transitioning from that held note to the A5 as a sort of musical explanation. So I'd call it countable outside of the spoiler box.

I'm not gonna get into a voice type debate here, but I'll say this - despite Michael Kiske being the Helloween singer who's known for having a higher tessitura, I was surprised to discover that Kiske's voice actually sounds deeper and more resonant in his low range than Deris' these days. Obviously Deris has lower recorded notes, but Kiske really seems to have a nice boomy warmth in his second octave that I don't hear as much of from Deris.
