{Vocal Summary}As part of the duo Coil with his partner Peter "Sleazy" Christofferson (of Throbbing Gristle and Hipgnosis fame), John Balance's Moon Musick revolutionized industrial music and the electronic underground. An active practitioner of Magick during his lifetime, Balance's lyrics are fascinated with the incorporeal, alchemy and sexuality.
As a vocalist, Balance had a warm, weighty baritone twang while singing in his lower register. Never really interested in exploring his upper register melodically, most of his high notes are either shouted, screamed, or are some kind of unusual head voice mewling. Though evidently he was capable of more tuneful melodies, as exemplified in what might be his greatest achievement, "Batwings (A Limnal Hymn)".
