{Vocal Summary}With her distinctive voice, sharp hook writing, and clever, often autobiographical lyrics, singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis has carved her name out as one of the most influential figures in 2000s indie music. Initially finding fame as a child actress in numerous '80s films, Lewis quickly pivoted to singing in her adult life, forming the band Rilo Kiley in 1998 alongside co-writer and guitarist Blake Sennett. Her voice during their early material was a fairly modest, girlish mezzo that was unusually light-sounding for its low placement and seldom stretched for any high notes. However, she would rapidly improve and diversify as a vocalist over the band's existence, adopting a stronger, more brassy tone befitting a rock frontwoman while still mostly keeping to her comfort zone range-wise. After Rilo Kiley's dissolution, her vintage-leaning solo material has gone in a wide variety of directions, with her wry, lush vocals becoming increasingly reminiscent of Stevie Nicks. Not the flashiest singer in the world, but a deservedly well-renowned musician whose sound has matured a great deal since her early days.
