Steven Jay Page (22 July 1970 - Present)
Years Active: 1988 - Present
Associated Acts: Barenaked Ladies (1988-2009)
Vocal Range: D2 - A5
{Vocal Summary / Bio}Best known as a founding member and co-lead vocalist of the quirky Canadian alt-rock group Barenaked Ladies, singer-songwriter Steven Page has made a clear mark upon his country's musical scene with his inimitably foghorn-like timbre and a weighty, powerhouse belting style that takes cues from musical theater and opera. As the more vocally gifted of the band's two main songwriters, he took the lead vocal on the majority of the band's early material, though he also contributed both high and low parts to the band's numerous lush vocal harmonies. Later on, though, the commercial success of songs led by co-writer Ed Robertson (including the rap-driven hit "One Week) made him more of an equal partner in the lead vocal department, pushing Page more toward the soaring, emotional ballads and wryly ironic rock tunes that are his forte. Dissatisfaction with some of the band's more gimmicky ventures such as the children's album Snacktime, as well as a highly-publicized arrest for cocaine possession, led him to leave the band for a solo career in 2009. This led him to almost completely shed the comedic trappings of his old band, instead forging an eclectic set of solo recordings that put his name out as a genuine, serious musician and songwriter.
Vocally, Page is a relatively high baritone able to pull a strong, chest-heavy belt to the top of the fourth octave while still having a solid, weighty lower register that was responsible for a fair chunk of the Barenaked Ladies' lower harmonies and that has only developed further with age. Judging by first-album performances such as "Brian Wilson" and "What a Good Boy", his voice was already quite developed and full-sounding from the outset, showing that much of his ability is due to natural talent as opposed to training. Though most of his climaxes rely upon his signature big, vibrato-filled belts, he has a serviceable if somewhat hooty-sounding falsetto as well, which is showcased in moments such as the end of "Break Your Heart". And despite his usual clean tone on most of his notes, he sometimes powers particularly emotional moments by pushing his voice just to the edge of breaking, sometimes even escalating to a full-on scream. So far as consistency goes, though his voice in studio has largely remained in top form to this day, his live performances have been somewhat more uneven; his Barenaked Ladies shows in particular ranged from incredible, pitch-perfect showcases of vocal intensity to flat, voice-cracking struggles depending on how much he had blown out his voice in the past couple days. This aside, though, Page's unique and powerful voice alongside his sharp songwriting skills have deservedly made him into one of Canada's more recognizable musicians, and judging by the quality of his most recent solo material, he's set to keep delivering the goods for many years to come.
