鈴華 ゆう子 (Suzuhana Yuko) (Born 7 June)
Years Active: 2011-present
Associated Acts: Hanafugetsu (2012-present), Wagakki Band (2013-present)
Vocal Range: E♭3 - Bb5
{Vocal Summary/Bio} Best known as lead vocalist for the eclectic Japanese folk rock/metal group Wagakki Band, Yuko Suzuhana exemplifies the group's mission of taking traditional music and updating it for the modern age. Trained from a young age in the ancient Japanese tradition of shigin (essentially putting ancient poetry to song), she swiftly became a master of the style, winning national shigin competitions while working on a college degree in piano performance. After forming the folk music project Hanafugetsu with two of her shigin accompanists, she came up with the idea of blending their traditional sound with a more modern, Western style. With the addition of five more members, Wagakki Band was formed, and its energetic, often virtuosic use of traditional instrumentation swiftly attracted a sizable international audience.
Vocally, Suzuhana's most standout quality is her powerful vibrato, which varies from a soft, mournful quaver to a monumental shake wide enough to drive a truck through- this is best demonstrated on her numerous long, wailing sustains. She is fairly high-placed compared to most other female singers, able to pull off fifth octave notes in a strong, bright-sounding belt that readily flips to a lighter head voice. Her lower register isn't the best, however; her larynx begins audibly lowering as soon as she enters the third octave, and practically all the band's lower backing vocals are passed off to her male bandmates. Still, her full-sounding, "mature" tone in that register conceals this quite well, and the power and consistency of her midrange more than make up for it. This consistency extends to the group's live performances as well, with Suzuhana delivering confident, energetic vocals alongside elaborate dance routines incorporating fans, umbrellas, and even swords. Overall, a consummate professional of a singer with a keen knowledge of where her voice shines and how to most tastefully show it off.
