{Vocal Summary}
With his powerful, confident high notes, thick European accent, and gloriously subtlety-free vibrato,Thomas Winkler has a voice that seems designed for the steel-swinging, dragon-riding realm of power metal. From his humble beginnings as a notary public in Switzerland singing in a local band by the name of Emerald, his audition tape for Dragonforce caught the attention of Alestorm's Christopher Bowes, who was in search of a suitably soaring lead vocalist for his new tongue-in-cheek power metal project by the name of Gloryhammer. Thus, Winkler took on the role of Angus McFife, Crown Prince of Dundee, and began his quest as frontman of one of the most wonderfully over-the-top bands in the galaxy.
In many ways, Winkler is a fairly stereotypical power metal vocalist, with a powerhouse fifth-octave-spanning belting style taken straight from the Bruce Dickinson playbook. Still, he has a somewhat heavier, raspier sound than many other tenors in the genre, with a notably dark sound in the third octave and fairly connected highs even at the top of his range. In addition, he has a surprisingly strong (albeit somewhat low-larynx) sound in his lower register, and though being the singer in a power metal band- especially one that intentionally leans into genre tropes as much as Gloryhammer does- leaves one's lows rather underutilized outside of the occasional backing vocal or dramatic narration, he has shown off this part of his voice admirably in a few independent tracks and covers. Still, though, it's his piercing, dramatic high notes that are the star of the show, and though his live performances of said notes may be somewhat inconsistent, there's no doubting the charisma he puts into every appearance. Though he may have been in something of a parody band, Winkler's vocal abilities are no joke, and he has the potential to be far more than just another cheesy power metal caricature in his work going forward.
