Eric Sean Nally (26 April 1986 - present)
Years Active: 2004-present
Associated Acts: Foxy Shazam (2004-2014, 2020-present)
Vocal Range: A2 - B6
{Bio/Vocal Summary}Though best known among many for his prominent vocal feature in Macklemore's "Downtown", Eric Nally spent the previous ten years as the famously eccentric and wild frontman of Cincinnati rock group Foxy Shazam, where his theatrics- both vocal and otherwise- tended to steal the show. Through Foxy's musical evolution from avant-garde post-hardcore to Queen-influenced glam rock, as well as in his subsequent solo and guest work, he consistently has become an absolute tsunami of rockstar energy on stage, with signature moves including chewing and swallowing lit cigarettes, riding upon bandmates' heads, and rapidly whipping the mic stand in every direction. Combined with his soft-spoken and kind (if still somewhat odd) persona off-stage, it has generated an undeniable Jekyll-and-Hyde sort of mystique.
So far as his voice goes, Nally is a clearly high-placed tenor, with strength and ease throughout the upper fourth octave and practically no lows to speak of; most of his songs bottom out at around A3, and even his speaking voice is unusually light and high-pitched. In his early material, he favored a mixed vocal approach, with comparably modest clean singing contrasting with manic, unhinged screams and howls. However, by the 2010 release of Foxy's self-titled album, these harsh vocals had entirely vanished in favor of a soaring, powerful clean classic rock tone that has drawn numerous comparisons to Freddie Mercury, not just for its evident similarities in timbre but for Nally's growing penchant for layering in numerous Queen-esque backing choirs. Eventually, though, his no-holds-barred vocal approach and flagrantly reckless touring behavior caught up with him, resulting in a notably weaker, softer, more falsetto-heavy approach on their last album before hiatus, Gonzo. Nonetheless, he has seemed to be on the mend since then, with his voice far closer to peak form on solo singles and guest appearances, and some strong vocals on Foxy Shazam's recent comeback albums. With his old band returning and a full solo album on the horizon, Nally's role as one of the most unique frontmen in modern rock is one that is far from over.
