Well, can't argue with Chrissie Hynde on that, seeing just how distinctive her voice has proven to be. Among its main characteristics are a naturally low placement that lends itself to effortless notes around the lower 3rd octave (even the upper 2nd octave sounds rather easy for her despite not receiving as much musical usage), a split between two different tones for higher notes (a husky belting register capable of vibrato in the upper 4th octave and a softer, brighter sounding tone that has seen more usage in recent years, especially on Valve Bone Woe) and a less utilized but very capable falsetto register. Chrissie's voice has aged gracefully (especially considering a lack of formal training), with her range mostly remaining unchanged throughout the years (slightly stronger lows, slightly less strong belts aside). Technical aspects aside, there's something about the way she sounds that just capture sounding natural, at times effortless, yet still charismatic and badass. Even in her most vulnerable performances, it just comes out. It's the kind of voice that commands attention without having to strain much. At times smoky, at times striking with clarity but not overt polish and every now and then just going totally vicious. It's that tone...free of vocal fry and just naturally potent while going low.
