As the frontman and principal songwriter for Los Angeles band The Airborne Toxic Event, Mikel Jollett's world-weary voice and poetic lyrics have always been adept at conveying a state of angst and heartbreak somewhere between adolescence and adulthood. A baritone through and through, his low register is booming and resonant in the upper second octave, but quickly falls off below F2. His highs, meanwhile, are often characterized by a full-chest approach that leads to most notes above a certain point sounding raspy and strained- technically improper, perhaps, but perfect for driving the songs' more emotional climaxes.
