Scottish synthpop group Chvrches have been one of the most talked about bands of their respective genre this decade, in no small part due to the sweet and soaring vocals of Lauren Mayberry. Her clarity of diction and tonal resonance pushes their already memorable hooks to the next level, working just as efficiently over sparse arrangements (such as in "Afterglow" or "Really Gone") as she does over a wall of synths and electronic beats. Her vocal placement is quite high, allowing her to sing melody lines well into the 5th octave with an extreme level of ease, both with a softer head voice tone and a more belted approach. In spite of this, I suspect we have not yet heard the highest reaches of what she is capable of in this department as it is clear that she chooses to emphasize the delivery of the melody line over any over the top embellishments, and as such maintains a tasteful vocal delivery throughout her music. One way or another, she is a strong example of a singer who knows exactly where her voice shines and puts it to great use, thereby maintaining an admirable degree of vocal consistency regardless of the musical situation.
