She's a Trot singer from Busan. Her music's kept the essence of the Trot music she and her peers (Park Chun-seok, Lee Mi-ja) have made since the '60s (the old-school production values, the heavy vocal inflections). She was seen as a charming contradiction when she debuted; a heavy dramatic voice paired with an attractive feminine demeanour.
Moon debuted at 16, and alongside success a lot of misfortune has fallen upon her; at 19 once news broke of a love affair of hers she attempted suicide, in the '70s she was injured in a fire at the Sejong Theatre, during her prime a lot of her and her peers' music was banned under military governments, and in the mid-80s she was badly injured in a car accident…

Wow. She must be a really strong woman. I guess she's one of those people who were huge in their day but sort of fell to obscurity with the rise of contemporary pop./whatever modern music relevant to the region. Seeing her live is great, the people watching the performance really seem to like her. She seems like she's a star to her culture/people rather than mainstream media (which is by no means a negative observation). And has she always been a contralto (throughout her career at least)? Her lower register is so well developed it's impressive actually.
