As the codpiece wearing, flute wielding, and boundary pushing frontman of Jethro Tull, Ian Anderson has become a textbook example of a rock and roll eccentric. With the disposition of a British stage actor and the vocabulary of a renowned poet, his approach to songwriting is characterized by a meld of the cerebral and the absurd, a combination that is perhaps the first of its kind. Though his persona and flute skills get the most focus by journalists and newcomers to the world of Tull, his eccentric delivery remains instantly recognizable. His low range possesses a tremendous resonance that is used to great effect in pieces like Fat Man, Baker St. Muse, or Big Dipper - demonstrating a natural ability in the bass-baritone range that was almost without peer in the scene of his most classic vocal era, but it is characteristic mid range snarl that is perhaps the most iconic quality of his vocal style. While his tasteful approach may not win any vocal technique awards, his unique sense of character and drama remain a great part of the Jethro Tull story.
NOTE: I have chosen to list all of the tracks from the Thick as a Brick album by their individual part names as reflected in the downloadable version of the 40th anniversary edition. The reason for this is it makes it easier to find exactly where the specific notes in the long tracks are to be found. This was not done for A Passion Play, partly for the sake of brevity but also because that album was never re-released with the parts separated into individual tracks that way.
