A famous breakout star with a homely charm turned into squandered goodwill, and eventually an infamous member of the 27 Club, Amy Winehouse was once set to conquer the world and then some. With her often raw belting and soulful melisma taken straight from the likes of Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway, Amy began to embody a sort of new Soul movement in mid-noughties Europe -- a distinctly British sort of sensibility combined with American Soul singing briefly dominated the billboards with Amy in the forefront. It was a sort of subversion of American Soul tropes where the R&B turned from lively to lonely and the Soul was transported to the boroughs of Greater London.
Despite earning scorn for her celebrity status during her time on this earth, Amy's artistry burned out before its time in a way that is still felt throughout pop music and with the help of artistic tributes from Lady Gaga to Adele her legacy is continuing to turn heads in a more positive light today. While the movement of new white soul she briefly headed may have abruptly imploded, there should be no doubt in anyone's mind that Amy's distinct vocal presence combined with her cinematic production changed pop's trajectory forever.
