Metric's charismatic frontwoman Emily Haines is a defining voice of modern indie music. She's got a great low register that she puts to considerable use while her higher range is a lot brighter sounding than her lower tones would suggest. It's an interesting contrast that plays into the duality between indie rock and synthpop that Metric often play with, and that coupled with her expressive delivery is among her most defining vocal features. Interestingly, the early part of her career was more oriented around grungy mid to lower range singing that had a healthy dose of 90s attitude, whereas in the last decade she's developed her head voice ability to surprising heights and has played with a somewhat sweeter sounding tone. Whatever approach she's using, Haines is a consistently fun singer to listen to.
