Judy Garland
Vocal Range: A2–B5
Years active: 1924–1969
Also known as: Frances Ethel 'Baby' Gumm (1922–1934), Miss Show Business, Joots
{Vocal Summary}
If Judy Garland's voice could be summarised, these words come to mind: emotive, confident, robust & versatile.
Upon her rise to fame with MGM, her vocal power, dynamism and dead-on emotional delivery were palpable, which only blossomed as she began to explore more ambitious vocal territory. By the mid-1940s, Garland displayed a remarkably versatile mixed voice; she could go from the soft, delicate crooning of 'White Christmas' & 'Look for the Silver Lining' to the piercing, soaring belting in 'The Interview' & 'March of the Dogies' - an asset she continued to use to her advantage thereafter. This technical ability came in spite of the increasingly gruelling schedule she kept at MGM's behest, something that could have 'burned out' any other voice. Judy did display control over her upper head voice right up to the sixth octave too, on occasion. Nevertheless, perhaps the easiest area of her voice was her lows, which only improved with time, with her gradual move towards Jazz & Torch songs. This was best expressed in performances such as 'Danny Boy', 'It's a New World', 'Why Was I Born?' & 'Then You've Never Been Blue'.
After facing life-threatening illness, on top of ongoing dependencies on sedatives & stimulants, Judy Garland's voice went from strength-to-strength as she toured sold-out venues in the early '60s - it must be said, however, that Garland's intonation and vocal control had faltered somewhat. Thanks to the 'comebacks' of The Judy Garland Show, her starring role in 'I Could Go on Singing', and appearances at the London Palladium and The Hollywood Palace, Garland broadened her musical horizons with contemporary styles, relying on her unfailing chest voice and lower register as she entered her forties. As the '60s drew to a close, perhaps out of necessity due to four decades' vocal overuse, recurring brushes with death and visibly failing health, Judy softened her approach somewhat, heard in her lower, more lyrical final performances.
All this goes to show that Judy Garland has rightfully earned her place alongside the 20ᵗʰ century's most revered and distinctive singers.
