Owner of one of the most sublime voices to ever be recorded, Annie Haslam fronted the criminally overlooked prog rock band Renaissance through their most successful years. Combined with with the lyricism and musicianship of other members John Tout and Betty Thatcher, her alluring stage presence and distinctive soprano voice - which draws influence from folk music - earned the band something of a cult following over the years.

Having been classically trained prior to her stint in Renaissance, Annie's voice is perhaps one of the most pristine voices ever committed to record. Her upper register is an immensely pleasant and clear one, her head voice being very flexible and, at times, surprisingly powerful. Despite her obvious technical prowess, however, Annie never loses the emotion behind her vocal performances, her gorgeous tone meaning that even in her mid-range, Annie still sounds beautifully tender. While one may assume that Annie's voice has weakened somewhat over the past fifty years, her vocal performances nowadays are, in fact, still as remarkable as ever - even now, Annie is still capable of reaching those gorgeous high notes listeners fell in love with her for in the '70s.

Hi, shared this with a Renaissance Fans group on FB (of which Camp and Sullivan are members! but not Annie lolzzz) and they liked it very much. Thanks a lot for compiling this. I have heard a better performance of Jigsaw from the Ripley Hall PA concert '81 but it's not up on YT. Found it on this place called guitars101forums which has lots of great, high quality bootlegs of this band's live concerts. Would highly recommend the one of their show at Palladium, New York '82. Anyhow, the Jigsaw note is just an A5 so it doesn't much matter either way. But just to note that she CAN hit that ridiculous scream three times in a performance (albeit she jokingly complained after the song, "That one does tire me out a little, I am afraid".

I just came across a duo from Brazil called Fleesh, that has done a full album of Renaissance covers. Their singer, Gabby Vessoni, has a really nice voice and range. She has a slight accent that isn't a problem at all. My one criticism is that her vocal articulation is too relaxed for this music and it jumps out at me at times. That seems like something that can be fixed with a bit of English dialect coaching, rather than a total musical makeover or anything like that. She is very listenable despite this issue. The guitarist (Celo Oliveira, actually the same guy playing ALL the instruments) is great and they really do capture Renaissance's sound very well, despite having to use synthesizers to fill in for a number of instruments.

Their Renaissance cover album is called "In The Mists of TIme" (a reference to a line from Ashes are Burning, I think) and it is 116 minutes long. I might buy the bandcamp download (fleesh.bandcamp.com) since it has no DRM etc.

In their defense, it seems to be something that her classical voice teacher witnessed and told her about her voice, that it spans five octaves. She mentions it in an interview: youtu.be/miPFFmM3B5c. But obviously she has not displayed a good chunk of it; perhaps she finds it superfluous.
