{Vocal Summary}One of the underground's more musically obtuse residents, Jamie Stewart has been a member of various projects throughout his career, but is likely best recognised as the frontman for Xiu Xiu. The music of Xiu Xiu is confrontationally introspective, uncomfortable and frustrating, punctuated by sparse percussion and piercing electronics as well as the maudlin voice of Stewart. Their music occupies a market they themselves have well and truly cornered.
As a vocalist Stewart is one of the strangest you'll come across. Though his voice on non-Xiu Xiu projects tends to be standard indie-fare, his trademark style is a little more unique. Stewart performs as if constantly on the verge of bursting into tears, sporting a desperate upper register and a sombre lower register, all while perfoming in a faux-baritone low larynx style. At its core, Stewart's voice is relatively bright. His lower register is relatively warm and respectably strong, though doesn't possess an awful lot of weight.
