Known as the frontman and guitarist of Opeth, Mikael Åkerfeldt is an iconic figure for both the Swedish metal scene and the modern prog scene in general. As a vocalist he is well known for his tendency to switch between some of the best guttural growls in the business and a clean, often soothing baritone mid range. While the decision to drop all harsh vocals from new Opeth music in 2011 was controversial, it did give way to Mikael's clean singing undergoing considerable improvements in confidence and power. As great as his singing was tonally in the band's earlier years, it was not until around Watershed and especially Heritage that Mikael really began pushing his voice to it's true capabilities. Given this fact I suspect he will continue to surprise us with his singing in years to come.
NOTE: After much discussion, it has been determined that the octave of Åkerfeldt's screams is debatable enough that all his harsh vocals have been placed under the "Questionable Notes" spoiler box below. Many thanks to mrchonghead for notewatching the vast majority of these screams (all except the Opeth albums from 2001-2008).
