The dark tone feels way too contrived. I get you on that, I hate trying to sing Cornell, but you're stuck with the natural tone you have, try getting to improve it and liking it, I'm stuck at that part myself.
Overall your tone doesn't mean shit if you can't get the feel of the song as well. So there's that too. Natural tone and the feel of the song.
