Probably best known for hits "Fast Car" and "Talkin' 'bout a Revolution", American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman rose to prominence in the '80s with her deeply moving self-titled album. Her performance at the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute shot her into the public eye, her simple yet honest songwriting striking a chord with the millions of worldwide listeners.
Tracy's music has never been focused especially around her vocal capabilities, but she has instead used her voice as a vehicle for delivering her deeply poignant lyrics. Her placement is a rather deep one, evidenced by the fact that she makes good use of her rich third octave notes in pretty much all of her songs. Her upper register is comparatively a bit limited, but her belted fourth octave notes are potent and solid. Tracy's voice has never been an extremely technical or flashy one, but her vocal delivery is incredibly sincere and emotive.
{A Few Examples of Her Voice}
This a cappella performance really gives a sense of how much emotion she gives to her performances.
Strong lows right from the start.
