Cerys Matthews the lead singer of Catatonia and a defining figure in '90s Britpop. Though her stint in Catatonia was a relatively short one, her talents shone through in her solo career, with her musical style - which I could only really describe as "remarkably Welsh" - being distinctive because of her symbolic lyrics and thin, raspy voice.
Cerys' unpolished vocal performances - both live and in the studio - arguably brought her more adoration than anything else. Undoubtedly a soprano because of how light her tone sounds, perhaps the most noticeable thing about Cerys' singing is her broad Welsh accent, something which pushes songs like signature hit "Road Rage" up a notch. Her lower register, while used infrequently, is more extensive than you'd immediately assume, while her upper register consists of two very different approaches: her iconic scratchy belting and a softer, almost childlike head voice. Calling Cerys a technical singer would be a bit of a stretch, but calling her a unique, distinguishable one would be more than accurate.
{A Few Examples of Her Voice}
Some low notes here, beltier stuff towards the end and the chorus nicely exemplifies the Welsh-ness of her voice. Oh yeah, and there's a lot of key changes.
I really like her belting throughout here.
Something a bit different - less belty stuff here. This song showcases how light and girly her voice can sound.

Questionable notes are any notes of questionable significance. In short, this spoiler acknowledges notes that I am aware exist, but do not want to contribute to the singer's range. These involve (but are not limited to) notes of questionable identity, notes of questionable legitimacy and notes of significantly poor quality.
